Lip Balms, Treatments and Routine FAQs

So you already have a daily skincare routine–but have you treated yourself to a lip care routine yet? A soft, smooth pout doesn’t start with a coat of red lipstick—it begins with regularly using lip treatments and balms to keep your pucker exfoliated, nourished, and moisturized, well before you apply your go-to lip color.

To help keep dry, cracked lips at bay all year, kiss up to this easy-to-follow lip care routine for a pout that’s in tip-top shape.

  • Exfoliate: To reveal super-smooth lips, removing dry skin flakes is the first step. Gently apply an exfoliating lip balm using small, circular motions to buff away dead skin and reveal silky, buttery lips. Choose a formula that’s infused with nourishing ingredients like jojoba oil, shea butter, and avocado oil to reap extra moisturizing benefits. Added bonus: when your lips are prepped and exfoliated, your lipstick will easily glide on, look smoother, and stay on longer.

  • Hydrate: Lips are especially prone to dryness and chapping, so after you exfoliate your lips, it’s important to immediately replenish lost moisture to keep things smooth. After your scrub, follow up by applying a hydrating lip balm to your pout.

If you’re on the clock or heading out for the day, a tinted lip balm will drench your lips in essential moisture while imbuing them with a sheer wash of color and shine. Staying in? Opt for a colorless lip balm infused with hemp seed and sunflower seed oils to nourish, condition, and soothe your pucker. Either way, we encourage you to reapply often!

  • Deeply Nourish: The final step in your lip care regimen? Slathering your lips with intense hydration using a lip mask. On the days your lips crave extra moisture, a leave-on lip mask will melt into your lips to treat and soothe dryness. Look for a formula enriched with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, and castor seed oil to give you that softer, smoother pout. For extra conditioning benefits, apply the mask to clean dry lips right before bed and wear it overnight.

What is lip balm?

Lip balms are used to treat dry lips. They may contain nourishing vitamins to heal lips, and oils or emollients to hydrate dry and chapped lips. For example, the Ride or Die Tinted Lip Balms are infused with jojoba oil, which contains fatty acids to heal and moisturize cracks and dryness and protect lips from becoming dry and chapped. Lip balms may also contain sheer tints for a light wash of lip color.

How often should I put on lip balm?

Because lip balm is a treatment, you can apply it multiple times throughout the day. Put on lip balm first thing before you start your day and reapply it any time your lips start to feel dry or after you eat or drink. You should also consider applying a tint-free lip balm before you go to bed to treat and moisturize your lips while you sleep.

What is a tinted lip balm?

Tinted lip balms deliver the healing and moisturizing treatments of color-free lip balms, while also providing your lips with a sheer wash of color. Just like your favorite lipsticks or lip glosses, tinted lip balms like the Hydrating Core Lip Shine come in a wide variety of shades, from mauve, rose and coral to deep red and berry.

What does a lip scrub do?

A lip scrub or lip exfoliator gently buffs away dry surface skin, leaving lips smoother and softer. Lip scrubs generally have a slightly gritty or sugary texture, which helps to lift off the dry skin. Lipsticks, lip liners and lip glosses all go on more evenly and look clearer and more consistent when lips are exfoliated first. What’s more, a lip scrub like the Moisturizing Lip Exfoliator contains conditioning ingredients like vitamin E, shea butter, avocado oil, grapeseed oil and jojoba oil to leave lips feeling pillowy and conditioned.

How do I use a lip scrub?

Apply lip scrub before you put on your lipstick, lip liner or lip gloss. Swipe the scrub across your top and bottom lips. Use your index finger to work the scrub into your lips. Gently remove the scrub with a damp cotton pad until there’s no trace remaining on your lips. Once your lips are dry, proceed with your lip color.
